IFS Collaborative Research Project’s “Team Forest Carbon” Hosts Earth Day Webinar to Present Its Results

Published: 2021-05-04

In conjunction with Earth Day on 22 April 2021, the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) and Srinakharinwirot University, Thailand, co-organized an international webinar entitled Collaborative Research: Estimating Net Ecosystem Production in Tropical Forests of Malaysia and Thailand.

FRIM’s Dr Jeyanny Vijayanathan and Mr Mohd Afzanizam Muda, and Srinakharinwirot University’s Dr Phongthep Hanpattanakit, are members of IFS’s collaborative research project’s Team Forest Carbon, one of 12 teams carrying out research in Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam as part of IFS’s partnership with SEARCA, the Philippines-based Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture.

The webinar’s objectives were to:

  • Showcase research findings from the short-term study on tropical forest ecosystem productivity.
  • Get feedback from and exchange information with the research community with regards to specific NEP components (heterotrophic respiration from soil, root decomposition and fine root dynamics in forest soil), and
  • Address research needs and gaps for NEP studies in tropical forests in the future.

Of the 254 pre-registered participants, 141 turned up for the livestream sessions, joined the online discussion, and received their participation e-certificates. FRIM extends appreciation to its Corporate Communication and ICT Units; our partner, Malaysian Society of Soil Science; our donors IFS and SEARCA; Ms Atirah Karim for technical assistance and as MC of the day; and everyone who contributed to the success of the webinar.
