IFS/Danida and IFS Jubilee Awards
The IFS/Danida Award
was established with special funds from the government of Denmark in 1996 and is given every year to grantees working in Sub-Saharan Africa (up to 12/year).
The IFS Jubilee Award
was established in 1997 as the "IFS Silver Jubilee Award" to complement the IFS/Danida Award. As a mark of the 30th Anniversary, the Board decided to change the name of the IFS Silver Jubilee Award to the IFS Jubilee Award. It is given to grantees from Latin America/ the Caribbean, Asia/ the Pacific and Northern Africa (up to 8/year).
Both awards are in the amount of 2000 USD.
Criteria
The IFS/Danida and IFS Jubilee Awards are given for noteworthy achievements clearly associated with research work supported by IFS. Candidates should therefore normally have an IFS project in progress, but those who have concluded IFS funded projects in the last five years are also eligible for nomination.Qualifications
The following types of achievements are considered as qualifications for the IFS/Danida and IFS Jubilee Awards:- Publications of research results of high quality and in a form that makes
the results easily accessible to the regional/international scientific community.
Normally, but not necessarily, this would be through international or regional
refereed journals, published books, or through reputable electronic means
(eg through electronic journals run by recognized professional associations).
- Research results of proven, positive applicability for developmental/socio-economic/
environmental purposes. "Proven" should be taken to mean that the results
have at least been tested in user/application trials.
- Scientific peer recognition at international/regional/national levels.
- High quality scientific performance under difficult physical and economic
circumstances. Ability to apply imaginative and innovative solutions to
overcome isolation and lack of resources in the conduct of a research task.
- Proven scientific leadership, eg by initiating and co-ordinating research networks.
Nomination and selection
Nominations for the IFS/Danida and IFS Jubilee Awards can be submitted by
IFS Scientific Advisers, IFS Affiliated Organisations, and relevant co-operating
organisations. Grantees may not nominate themselves.
Nominations for the IFS/Danida and IFS Jubilee Awards should be sent to the IFS Secretariat, where they will be registered and then distributed to the relevant Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC). The SACs will discuss the nominations within their Research Areas and submit a short-list to the Scientific and Grants Committee (SGC). From the shortlists the SGC will choose the Awardees for final approval by the Board of Trustees at its Annual Meeting.
Whenever possible and economically feasible, the actual handing over of the
Award to an Awardee will be done in conjunction with other events, such as
IFS workshops, an IFS Assembly, or other meetings.
